Supernatural’s Jared Padalecki is part owner of a business in Austin, Tex., called San Jac Saloon; Jacks is a separate bar located upstairs, that’s “known for high end libations, artisanal cocktails, and live acoustic performances from local country artists.” San Jac carries a large variety of Texas draft beer on tap and a wide selection of fine whiskeys. Corporate event bookings are also available. (www.sanjacsaloon.com/events).
Carol: Tell us about how San Jac came to be.
Jared: Growing up in San Antonio, I would often spend weekends and free time in Austin. I have several friends who went to UT, and I was actually headed to UT myself until I booked Gilmore Girls. I’ve had a lot of great times on 6th street, and a few friends and I always dreamed about opening a bar in the area where we would often end up. San Jac Saloon is on the corner of 6th street and San Jacinto Blvd (hence the name), and is an awesome place to start the night, or end the night, a great place to see some fantastic live music or even watch sports and lay low. It has it all.
Carol: What sets San Jac apart from other restaurants/bars?
Jared: What sets San Jac Saloon (and Jacks, upstairs) apart is our commitment to authenticity and fun. My co-owners and I all have careers OUTSIDE of the bar/restaurant space, so we have never approached this endeavor as the way we need to make money. It’s been more of a “hey, where would I like to go hangout?” Often times, we’ll make long term choices to make the space better, even when it might cost us financially.
Carol: What does the future hold for San Jac?
Jared: I’m not real sure about what the future holds. But I AM sure that we will do whatever is necessary to make sure that people who walk through the door have a great time and enjoy their days and nights.
Carol: Why should visitors and residents of Austin visit San Jac?
Jared: San Jac is unlike any other spot in Austin. That’s one of the reasons we took over that space on San Jacinto and 6th and set out to ENTIRELY recreate the vibe. We spent several months ripping out the existing space and making it what it is today, and I couldn’t be more happy with the outcome.
Carol: What's your favourite menu item at San Jac?
Jared: My favorite menu item depends on the night and the situation and the company I’m with. If it’s a Longhorn game and I’m there to watch it, I’ll usually go with a beer on draft. If I’m about to head to Eddie V’s a block south of us (and one of my favorite spots), I might go ahead and order a Manhattan or old-fashioned and nurse it while enjoying the atmosphere and the live music. And, if it’s just “one of those nights”, I’ll usually head upstairs to Jack’s and have some of the Single Barrel Jack Daniels that was hand-picked and specifically made for us. Come on in some time and I may just be your bartender (yes, I have my bartenders license 😁).
Carol: What do you enjoy most about being a partner?
Jared: What I personally enjoy most about being a partner is the commitment we all have to making San Jac Saloon and Jack’s the BEST places possible. Since we’re all career people outside of the bar industry, we are able to forego the need to make money first, and instead focus on enhancing ours and our patrons experience.
